Fab lashes—many of us dream of having them, that luxurious fluttering that draws people to your eyes. They make us feel gorgeous and always at the center of attention. We’ve all tried lots of different ways to make our lashes look dazzling, starting with drugstore falsies in our early days, but it’s time for an upgrade. It’s time to visit the lash salon.
As you make your way to the salon, however, you need to consider which option is best for you: lash lifts or lash extensions. We’ve put together a quick guide to help you choose.
Lash Lift vs Lash Extensions
A lash lift is like a perm for your eyelashes. Using a bonding formula, the lash technician curls your lashes (while also tinting them), making them looker curlier and longer.
In comparison, lash extensions are individual lashes that are attached to your natural ones with lash extension glue.
Why a Lash Lift? Pros & Cons
A lash lift looks as if you did a really great job putting on mascara—and it lasts for much longer, too. Not only do your lashes look natural, but all of their imperfections are also smoothed out. Another great thing about them is that you can easily get them wet without worrying about fallout and you’re unlikely to experience any irritation.
The appointment takes about an hour, and you only need to come in for a touch-up every 8-12 weeks. So, if you’re a low maintenance kind of person, this is just the solution for you.
Unfortunately, some of us are born with shorter lashes than others. If you’re one of those people, then sadly lash lifts won’t work for you.
- Natural, longer-looking lashes
- Low Maintenance
- The appointment takes about 45-60 minutes
- Last 4-6 weeks
- Not suitable if your natural lashes are short or sparse
- Cost: $50-100

Why Lash Extensions? Pros and Cons
Set those peepers on STUN, because that’s exactly what lash extensions will do! Meticulously applied, these perfect little strands will create a dramatic, attention-grabbing look. The more skilled your lash technician, the more they can play with lengths and curls to really create a work of art. A great set of lash extensions can often be the only “makeup” you have on for the day—and no one would even know you got up only a few minutes before needing to leave the house.
Although the appointment can take up to 2 hours, it’s definitely worth it. Just make sure to pop back into the salon once a month for maintenance and infills with your favorite lash tech.
- Can be customized from natural to super glamorous look
- A variety of styles to choose from
- The appointment takes about 1.5 hours to 3 hours
- Last 4-6 weeks before infills
- It requires some aftercare routines like daily cleansing, putting a lash coating sealer on
- Cost: $150-375 (depending on the volume and complexity); $70-160 for infills
